WASHINGTON -- While President George W. Bush wants people to sing the National Anthem in English, promoters of the Spanish version said Tuesday the State Department's own Web site has many translations of key historical documents.
If that's the case, they ask, then why not sing the anthem in Spanish?
There are translations on the site of the U.S. Constitution, Pledge of Allegiance and other documents. There are also four sets of Spanish-language lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner."
"Nuestro Himno" is a Spanish version of the anthem that debuted last week. Bush said that "people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the National Anthem in English."
British music producer Adam Kidron said the song affords immigrants who have still not learned the English language the opportunity to understand the character of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
