A north Alabama legislator thinks he has found a way to deter someone from taking his reserved parking space outside the Alabama Statehouse _ deflate the culprit's tires.
State Rep. Albert Hall, D-Gurley, let the air out of the left front tire of a car he said blocked him on a recent day of legislative work. Hall later learned the driver was the wife of Rep. Allen Layson, D-Reform, and said he now regrets what he did.
He said people have been blocking him in or taking his spot the whole session of the Legislature. Hall, a House parking committee member, said he has called wreckers to tow away cars parked in his spot. In the most recent case, Hall found Layson's car had been squeezed in as the third car into a parallel parking space for three. That left him wedged between Layson's car and another car.
Hall, who wiggled his way out, said he did not let the tire all the way down. "I just wanted her to have to stop and put some air in her tire and trouble her a little, too," he said. Rep. Alan Boothe, D-Troy, who is head of the Internal Affairs committee that oversees House parking, said he is trying to develop a better system. There are no clear signs of who parks where now.
